My Verse for 2013

At Celebration Community Church, we ask each of our members to find a "verse of the year." A verse that sums up their goals for the new year. Our senior pastor also asked each staff member to write about why they chose their verse of the year and send it out in our daily devotional to all of our church.

Today was my day so I thought I'd share...

I'm still having a really hard time believing it's the beginning of a new year already. A confession, I really dislike the beginning of a year. For me it's a time when I look back at all the things I didn't get done, all the mistakes I made and then I start making the long list of improvements i better get turned around in the new year. I tend to forget to look back at all the good things that have happened and all the improvements I have already made.

This year was the same and I have a long list of areas I'd like to improve on but this is one of the reasons I love choosing a verse of the year! It helps me focus on one big area and not pay quite as much attention to "all the other stuff."

My verse of the year for 2013 is:

"When they measure themselves with themselves and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding and behave unwisely." 2 Corinthians 10:12

Another confession, I have a HUGE comparison problem. I compare myself to everyone in everything and it drives me nuts. I can't imagine what my husband must think of me. I even use my comparisons as excuses. For example I'll say (and have said), "I don't want to go to a group exercise class. I'll just look slow and fat next to everyone else and I'll feel even worse about myself."

What a horrible attitude right!

My goal for myself this year is to stop comparing myself so much. Realistically, I won't stop comparing 100%. But I can start acting wisely and know when it's a healthy comparison or one that is hurting myself. I can find an accountability partner to pat me on the shoulder to tell me when I'm in the wrong. I can become a better Wife, Mom, Daughter, Sister and Friend by worrying less about how I compare and more about what I can already do.

I can be a happier, healthier me in 2013!

What are your goals for 2013? What will your verse of the year be?
